Ultimate Direction Fastpack 40 Vest Backpack

The Ultimate Direction Fastpack 40 is the highest-capacity Fastpack in the current range, combining 41 litres of carrying space with a vest-style front harness and backpack-style load distribution. At 715g, it is intended for larger ultra-running and fastpacking loads, including multi-day and self-supported trips where clothing, food and equipment exceed what a conventional running vest can accommodate.

A roll-top main compartment provides room for changing loads, while the full-length side zip gives direct access to equipment packed deeper inside without having to empty the pack from the top. Large rear stretch-mesh storage and two substantial side pockets keep additional clothing and frequently needed equipment outside the main compartment.

The front harness provides extensive storage around the hydration pockets, including two lower open-top pockets, four further stretch-mesh pockets and two water-resistant zipped pockets. Front hydration pockets accept 500ml Body Bottle 500 and Body Bottle 500 S soft flasks, while the side pockets can accommodate larger bottles up to 750ml. A dedicated rear compartment takes a reservoir up to 3 litres. Bottles and reservoir are not included.

For runners who do not require this much carrying space, the Fastpack 30 provides 31.7 litres at 690g, while the Fastpack 20 reduces capacity and weight further to 23.4 litres and 590g. This makes the Fastpack 40 the range option where carrying volume takes priority over the lower weight and smaller dimensions of the other Fastpacks.

Front hydration pockets: Two upper pockets with bungee compression accept 500ml Body Bottle 500 and Body Bottle 500 S soft flasks. Soft flasks are not included.
Extensive front storage: Two lower open-top pockets, four further stretch-mesh open-top pockets and two water-resistant zipped pockets keep food, phone, maps, headlamp, gloves and other smaller items accessible.
Full-side zip access: Opens deep into the main compartment so equipment can be reached without unpacking everything through the top.
Roll-top closure: Expands or compresses around changing loads and secures the top of the main compartment.
Infiknit and FastFlow back panel: Seamless harness construction combines with a breathable back-panel system to improve airflow and moisture management.
Side bottle storage: Two large side pockets can carry clothing, equipment or bottles up to 750ml.
External stretch storage: Large full-length rear stretch-mesh storage provides quick access to additional clothing and equipment.
3 litre reservoir compatible: Dedicated rear hydration compartment accommodates a reservoir up to 3 litres. Reservoir not included.
Sliding sternum adjustment: Rail-mounted sternum straps allow quick adjustment across the chest.
Removable T-hook waistbelt: Height-adjustable belt provides additional stability with larger loads and can be removed when unnecessary.
Side fit adjustment: Rib-area straps allow the pack to be adjusted around the runner and changing load.
Trekking-pole carry: Dedicated holders secure folding poles and move out of the way when not being used.
Water-resistant zipped storage: A large full-width zipped pocket secures valuables, with additional zipped storage and a key clip accessible from the external zip.
Daisy chains: External attachment points provide additional options for securing equipment.
Ice-axe loops: Provide external attachment for an ice axe when required.
Safety whistle: Integrated into the front harness.
Reflective detailing: Adds visibility in low light.

Sizing & Fit

The Fastpack 40 uses a unisex vest-style harness with sliding sternum adjustment, side/rib adjustment and a removable height-adjustable waistbelt. Measure around the bottom ribs while wearing the clothing you intend to use with the pack.

S/M: 64–102cm / 25–40in

M/L: 76–122cm / 30–48in

The size ranges overlap considerably. A fully loaded pack will fit more closely than an empty one, so intended clothing and typical load should be considered when choosing a size.
