GU HYDRATION & ELECTROLYTES

GU hydration products provide two different approaches to hydration and fuelling during ultra distance training and racing. Hydration Tabs add sodium and potassium to water with minimal carbohydrate, allowing most of your energy intake to come from food, gels, chews or other sources.

Roctane Energy Drink Mix combines carbohydrate and electrolytes in the same drink, together with amino acids. Caffeinated and caffeine-free flavours are available, allowing caffeine intake to be considered separately when choosing between the different Roctane options.

Choosing GU Hydration & Electrolytes

GU Hydration Tabs and Roctane Energy Drink Mix both add electrolytes to water, but have different roles. Hydration Tabs provide electrolytes with minimal carbohydrate, while Roctane combines carbohydrate, electrolytes and amino acids for fuelling and hydration together.

Which GU hydration product should I choose?

Choose Hydration Tabs when you want electrolytes in your drink while keeping most of your carbohydrate intake separate. This makes it easier to adjust food, gels or chews without substantially changing what is in your bottle or reservoir.

Choose Roctane Energy Drink Mix when you want a significant amount of carbohydrate together with electrolytes in the same drink. Each sachet provides 250 calories, 320mg sodium and 1900mg amino acids.

What is the difference between GU Hydration Tabs and Roctane Energy Drink Mix?

Hydration Tabs are primarily an electrolyte drink. They add sodium and potassium to water with only 10 calories per serving, so hydration and electrolyte intake remain largely separate from fuelling.

Roctane is primarily a combined fuel and hydration drink. Its much higher carbohydrate content means drinking it contributes significantly to both your fluid and calorie intake.

Should I choose caffeinated or caffeine-free GU hydration products?

Both Hydration Tabs and Roctane Energy Drink Mix are available in caffeinated and caffeine-free options. Caffeine-free versions allow caffeine to be controlled separately through coffee, cola, gels, chews or another source.

If choosing a caffeinated version, include the caffeine from the drink when considering your total intake from other sources. Check the individual product specification for the amount in each serving.

Can I use GU hydration products alongside other food and fuel?

Yes. Hydration Tabs are particularly straightforward to combine with separate food, gels or chews because they contribute very little carbohydrate themselves.

Roctane can also be used alongside other fuel rather than being your only calorie source. Because it already provides a substantial amount of carbohydrate, account for this when deciding what else to eat or drink.

Can I carry GU in a bottle, soft flask or hydration reservoir?

Yes. Both Hydration Tabs and Roctane Energy Drink Mix can be mixed with water and carried in suitable bottles, soft flasks or hydration reservoirs.

With effervescent Hydration Tabs, allow the tablet to dissolve and release its gas before tightly closing a bottle or soft flask. This helps avoid pressure building inside the container.
